Pickleweed Park Community Center & Library
50 Canal Street, San Rafael, CA 94901
Pickleweed Park provides the only recreation and green space available in San Rafael’s densely-populated and diverse Canal district. Group 4 designed an expanded community center with a gymnasium, multipurpose room, arts and crafts space, teen center, computer lab, and branch library. The design incorporates the original 1980s-era building, integrating the old and new into a highly functional and attractive focal point for Canal residents. A bright new interior design uses colors to aid wayfinding in this multicultural community.
Project challenges included replacing the foundation of the original building, which for 20 years had been sinking into its bay mud site. Group 4 provided support for fundraising efforts, including a successful grant application to the California State Library.
